Modern Science amazes me! Implantable devices now exist for sleep apnea, migraines, hearing assistance, cardiac arrhythmia, heart problems, and eye lenses. While I have worked with dental implants for years, and watched them progress in design and function, I can’t quite get my head around medical devices that improve and extend one’s years of quality within Life.
Dental implants have revolutionized the function of the oral cavity. People can now fully chew their food, mixing it with saliva to start the digestion process. They can form words that are fully understandable, and they have an inviting smile. Implants also provide a viable option when teeth are lost from sports or traffic accidents
Since I’d taught at Northwestern University’s Dental School, I was privileged to see the emergence of dental implants as manufacturers presented them at professional meetings. We had the responsibility of preparing program graduates for a future that embraced modern science and technology and were often the first to “play” with new materials. I was delighted that my chosen specialty was Prosthodontics, the best spot to be first in line for building teeth and structures that were functional and looked as natural as their originals!
According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, over 3 million people now have implants and this number grows by another half-million each year. The success rate of this procedure is 98%. I like to think that I got involved at the Ground Level of this procedure, and have had the opportunity to change lives.
