Tongue Thrusters

Yes, there is such a thing. It is estimated that we swallow over 1200 times a day, with four pounds of forward pressure on the front teeth each time. If you’ve ever seen someone smile and they have lots of space between their front teeth, they may push their tongue outward when they swallow. When someone swallows incorrectly, they need to see a Speech Pathologist who will evaluate the structure of their nose and throat, for proper air flow, and train that person to swallow differently. This process is called Myofunctional Therapy.

The good news is that orthodontists are well-versed on this topic and work alongside speech professionals to move teeth into their proper position.
