The Acid Bath of Purging

The Acid Bath of Purging

Imagine my shock when a beautiful person opens their mouth to reveal excess wear on the back of their front teeth, sometimes further back, too.  It is called “erosion”. And it isn’t just our teens who purge food from their stomach. I’ve had a seventy-six year old purging person justify the practice, claiming that her mother died of diabetes because she always ate too much. Americans are fascinated with “thin”. Athletes have to maintain specific weights to compete in their sports. And then there’s that upcoming vacation on the beach…

The stomach creates acid while digesting food.  When this harsh acid comes back up with food, it removes the enamel on teeth in a very distinctive pattern. The only way to rebuild these teeth is to place crowns on them. But first, a trained counselor must help them to stop this destructive habit.
